Breast ultrasound and mammography

The importance and effectiveness of mammography are such as to make it fundamental in the prevention of pathologies. Also for this reason, doctors recommend carrying out breast screening at regular intervals to always keep the possible presence of anomalies under control and intervene in time.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women. In many cases, however, it can be prevented or diagnosed in good time. Prevention must begin from the age of 20 with regular self-examination. It is then essential to continue with annual breast checks through ultrasound from the age of 20 onwards and through mammography (after the age of 40).
The breast specialist's evaluation, often after the age of 40, can be useful to clarify suspicious situations found after these tests.

When to have a mammography screening

Prevention is very important because identifying a very small tumor certainly increases the possibility of definitively curing it.
When to take the exams:
- between 20 and 40 years: generally an annual visit to the breast specialist is made. In particular situations, discovery of nodules or family history, it is preferable to investigate further through ultrasound and mammography.
- between the ages of 40 and 50: women with a family history should begin to undergo mammography tests on an annual basis, preferably combined with ultrasound.
- between 50 and 60 years old: the risk of developing breast cancer is quite high and women in this age group must necessarily have a mammogram every year.
After the age of 60, cancer prevention is important and in the case of breast cancer, it is even more so, given that between the ages of 50 and 70 the risk of developing this tumor reaches its highest levels. It is advisable to have a mammogram every year, at least up to the age of 75, because the average lifespan has increased and, consequently, good therapeutic results can be obtained even in elderly patients.
There is no provision for preparation for the breast examination. The patient will only have to remember to bring with her all the tests possibly prescribed by her doctor.
