How the electromyographic exam is carried out

In the first part of electromyography, the conduction speed of an electrical stimulus along the nerves is detected and other parameters are evaluated, thanks to electrodes applied to the muscles.

In the second phase of electromyography, however, a needle electrode is inserted into the muscle at rest and then in minimum and maximum contraction. In this way, it is possible to detect any spontaneous electrical potential (sign of denervation), measure the amplitude and duration of the electrical potentials, and how many motor units are activated during maximum effort. Few units indicate nerve suffering, too many units indicate muscle suffering.

Electroneurography

It is the study of potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of both motor and sensory peripheral nerves. Mild electrical impulses are delivered using fork or ring stimulators. The potentials are recorded superficially from the various nerves using electrodes of various shapes: cup, bar, ring, needle or adhesive. The various parameters of the potentials obtained are then calculated: latency, amplitude, conduction velocity and reflex responses and compared with normal values.

Home respiratory polysomnography

Polysomnography is the term commonly used to indicate a simultaneous recording of multiple physiological parameters during the night.
Normally during the test the air flow of the nose and mouth, the sound intensity of snoring, the movements of the chest and abdomen, the patient's position in the bed and the oxygen saturation in the blood are recorded.
The execution of polysomnography involves the application of two bands to the chest and abdomen, a pulse oximeter on the finger and an external breathing meter on the nose; during sleep a small computer to which all the sensors are connected records the main breathing parameters.
Upon awakening, the patient brings the polysomnographic device back to our center and the data obtained will be read and interpreted, summarized in traces, tables, statistics and graphs.
From these data it is clear whether one is suffering from obstructive apnea syndrome and will determine the severity of this pathology.

CPAP supply and titration

In the event that the obstructive apnea syndrome is of a high degree and the use of a ventilator is necessary, at our facility it is possible to view and purchase a CPAP and have the titration comfortably at home.
